Coatings and fireproofing
Surface area calculator for coating and fireproofing
Add line items by shape in metres or feet, pick pipe by nominal size with a fitting-complexity factor, and get the area per row and the total in square metres or square feet. Carry the total straight into the paint consumption calculator.

Pipe = π OD L x fitting factor (simple 1.00, moderate 1.15, complex 1.35), OD from the NPS table. Vessel = π D L + 2 x 1.084 D² for 2:1 ellipsoidal heads. Tank = π D H + roof disc (+ bottom). Areas are geometric; add your own factor for overspray and edges in the paint calculator.
How it works
- 01Pipe: π x outside diameter x length, from the ASME B36.10 outside-diameter table, times a fitting factor (simple 1.00, moderate 1.15, complex 1.35) for flanges, elbows and supports.
- 02Vessel: shell π D L plus two 2:1 ellipsoidal heads at 1.084 D² each.
- 03Tank: shell π D H plus the roof disc, with the bottom included when it is coated.
- 04Cylinder, sphere, plate and box: the geometric surface, with closed ends optional on a box.
- 05Rows sum to a total; the carry-over link passes it to the paint calculator as the area.

- Areas are geometric. Overspray, edges, welds and surface profile are handled by the loss factor in the paint calculator, not here.
- The fitting factors are the same uplifts the platform applies; a heavily fitted rack can exceed 1.35 and should be measured.
- Insulated or jacketed items need the outer diameter of the insulation, not the pipe.

Questions about this calculator
How do I calculate the surface area of a pipe for painting?
Multiply π by the outside diameter and the length, using the true outside diameter for the nominal size (a 6 inch pipe is 168.3 mm outside), then add a factor for flanges, elbows and supports. This calculator does both from the pipe size.
How much extra area do fittings add?
It depends on how fitted the run is. The platform uses three bands: simple runs at no uplift, moderate at 15 percent, complex at 35 percent. Measure a sample rack if a quote depends on it.
What area do vessel heads add?
A 2:1 ellipsoidal head has a surface close to 1.084 times the diameter squared, so a vessel adds two of those to the shell area. Hemispherical heads are larger, at half a sphere each.
Does intelliSPEC use the same shapes?
Yes. intelliPAINT and intelliFIRE estimate coating and fireproofing quantities from a multi-shape surface-area engine with the same pipe size table and fitting factors, summing rows into the record.
