SSPC-PA 2

SSPC-PA 2 dry film thickness acceptance calculator

Enter the specified minimum and maximum dry film thickness, the coating restriction level from the specification, and the spot measurements for the area. The calculator applies the level's spot limits and the area-average rule and lists any spot outside limits.

Advisory result. Provisional until a qualified inspector or engineer verifies it against the governing code edition.

How it works

  1. 01Each spot measurement is the average of at least three gage readings within a small circle; the calculator takes spots, not gage readings.
  2. 02The area average of the spots must fall inside the specified range at every restriction level.
  3. 03Spot limits by level: Level 1 none below minimum or above maximum; Level 2 spots to 80 percent of minimum and 120 percent of maximum; Level 3 to 80 percent and 150 percent; Level 4 to 80 percent, no upper spot limit; Level 5 unrestricted spots.
  4. 04The result lists the spots outside limits so the area can be re-measured or reworked.

Formulas

Areamin ≤ mean(spots) ≤ max
Spotsspot ≥ f_min x min and spot ≤ f_max x max, by level

Read before you rely on it

  • Confirm the spot factors against the edition of SSPC-PA 2 your specification cites; the levels above follow Table 1 of the current standard.
  • The number of spots per area and the area size (for example five spots per 100 square feet) come from the standard's sampling rules, not this calculator.
  • Gage calibration and adjustment on the substrate come first; a wrong gage reads consistently wrong.

Questions about this calculator

What are the SSPC-PA 2 restriction levels?

Five levels that set how far individual spot measurements may fall outside the specified range while the area average stays inside it. Level 1 is strictest, with no spot outside the range; Level 5 restricts only the average. The specification names the level.

What is a spot measurement?

The average of at least three gage readings taken within a 40 mm circle. Spots are then averaged over the area. The calculator works on spots.

What happens when a spot fails?

The area does not conform. Depending on the specification the area is re-measured to bound the nonconforming region and then reworked, and the exception is recorded.

Does intelliSPEC apply these rules?

Yes. intelliPAINT carries DFT verification and acceptance and DFT statistics calculators and produces coating exception reports for the spots and areas that fall outside the specification.
