Water tank and coating integrity record

2026-07-24 · Welded steel water reservoirs, elevated tanks, digesters & transmission mains (AWWA D100 / D103)

Measured outcomeMulti-decade capital recoating and tank-rehabilitation budgets backed by measured UT thickness and DFT condition records.

A regional water and wastewater utility operating dozens of welded and bolted steel potable-water reservoirs, elevated storage tanks, clarifiers, and anaerobic digesters relied on five-year engineering PDF reports to plan tank rehabilitation and NSF/ANSI 61 lining replacements.

Current state before intelliSPEC

  • Static PDF inspection reports: Dive-team, ROV, and drained-tank inspection reports sat in 150-page PDFs, making it difficult to compare roof-rafter corrosion, shell pitting, or floor-plate thickness across the authority's tank fleet.
  • Contractor lining quality gaps: During AWWA D102 / C210 interior relining projects, ambient dew-point logs, SSPC-PA 2 dry-film thickness checks, and low/high-voltage holiday test results were collected on paper by third-party inspectors.
  • State primacy agency audit prep: Assembling sanitary-survey evidence for vent screens, overflow flaps, cathodic protection, and roof hatches across distributed reservoirs took weeks.

Configured path

The utility implemented intelliVISION, intelliINSPECT, intelliNDT, intelliPAINT, and intelliCOMPLY, using intelliEDGE at remote tank sites.

  1. System-wide reservoir and digester register: Every storage tank, clearwell, digester cover, and chemical storage vessel was cataloged in with roof, shell, floor, and appendage components.
  2. Offline AWWA D100 and sanitary walks: Field crews captured routine sanitary surveys and five-year structural/UT inspections on at remote hilltop tanks without cellular service.
  3. Hold-point lining verification: During tank recoating, enforced blast-profile, soluble-salt, DFT, and holiday-testing hold points and compiled the final coating databook automatically.

Measured outcome

  • Condition-ranked capital planning: Engineering ranks tank rehabilitation and relining projects across the district using live coating-breakdown grades and shell/roof corrosion rates.
  • Fast state EPA sanitary surveys: Sanitary-defect photos and repair sign-offs are retrievable by reservoir tag on demand.
  • DefensibleNSF-61 lining warranties: Every relined potable tank carries a complete, signed coat-by-coat quality record.
