Utility substation and penstock integrity

2026-06-26 · Substation transformers, SF6 breakers, gas regulator stations & penstocks (NERC / ASME / IEEE)

Measured outcomeField inspections across hundreds of remote substations and regulator stations synced to one ISO 55000 asset register.

A combined electric and natural-gas utility managing transmission substations, hydroelectric penstocks, peaking-plant pressure vessels, and city-gate gas regulator stations faced a massive geographic spread. Field crews spent hours driving to remote mountain and rural sites, only to record inspections in disconnected forms that never updated the engineering asset health model.

Current state before intelliSPEC

  • Three different tools for one substation: Visual containment and oil-leak checks lived in one mobile form app, infrared thermography and ultrasonic corona scans lived on SD cards, and pressure-piping UT thickness readings lived in spreadsheets.
  • Penstock and gas-heater NDE lag: Ultrasonic thickness and weld inspections on hydro penstocks and gas line heaters took weeks to reach the integrity engineer.
  • Audit friction under NERC and state PUC rules: Proving that every critical substation asset and gas pressure-limiting station was inspected on schedule with resolved corrective actions required cross-system data pulls.

Configured path

The utility deployed intelliVISION, intelliEDGE, intelliINSPECT, intelliNDT, intelliINTEGRITY, and intelliCOMPLY.

  1. ISO 55000 hierarchy across grid and gas: Substations, main power transformers, circuit breakers, penstock cans, and regulator-station piping circuits were unified in .
  2. Offline multi-discipline field capture: Crews checked out entire transmission corridors in , capturing visual walks, thermal images, SPCC secondary-containment checks, and UT pipe thickness in a single visit.
  3. Risk-ranked capital replacement: Condition grades and wall-loss rates fed , giving asset-management planners a defensible risk score for rate-case and capital filings.

Measured outcome

  • One trip, one record: Field technicians capture visual, thermal, NDE, and environmental compliance data on the same tablet offline.
  • Defensible PUC and NERC evidence: Every inspection, anomaly, and corrective sign-off is timestamped and retrievable by substation or circuit.
  • Penstock and piping life extension: Measured corrosion rates and API 579 / ASME B31G screening support safe operating intervals.
