A biopharmaceutical manufacturing site operating cleanrooms, water-for-injection (WFI) loops, clean-steam generators, and jacketed bioreactors needed its mechanical integrity and passivation history to meet both ASME pressure-vessel rules and FDA 21 CFR Part 210/211 / Part 11 electronic-record expectations.
Current state before intelliSPEC
- Paper databooks in quality archives: Orbital weld logs, borescope videos, ferrite checks, and citric/nitric acid passivation certificates sat in physical turnover binders that required manual retrieval during FDA or EMA inspections.
- Disconnected rouge and elastomer tracking: Visual inspections for Class I to III rouging, diaphragm replacements, and sanitary gasket cycles were tracked in unit spreadsheets separate from the pressure-vessel history.
- Campaign changeover delays: Verifying that all autoclave and bioreactor pressure relief devices, sight glasses, and spray balls were inspected and signed off before batch release took days of QA review.
Configured path
The site deployed intelliVISION, intelliINSPECT, intelliNDT, intelliCREW, and intelliCOMPLY, with cleanroom tablet capture on intelliEDGE.
- Sanitary and pressure-boundary register: Every bioreactor, WFI tank, heat exchanger, and hygienic transfer line was registered in
with its ASME Section VIII and ASME BPE surface-finish classification. - Electronic sign-off in the suite: Technicians used
inside clean utility spaces to log borescope inspections, rouge grading, and passivation parameters with timestamped electronic signatures. - QA review and deviation routing:
enforced multi-level engineering and quality approvals on every inspection and routed any surface anomaly into a tracked corrective action before campaign release.
Measured outcome
- Walk-ready GMP inspections: Quality and engineering teams pull the complete weld, borescope, passivation, and pressure-test history for any WFI loop or vessel in seconds.
- Predictable campaign changeovers: Shutdown and turnaround checks between biologics campaigns close digitally without paper routing delays.
- Trended derouging intervals: Rouge progression is tracked by vessel and loop, shifting passivation scheduling from fixed calendar guesses to observed condition.
