Steam piping, autoclaves, and LOTO

2026-06-30 · Autoclaves, steam headers, air receivers & structural cranes (ASME B31.1 / NBIC / OSHA 1910.147)

Measured outcomeStandardized mechanical integrity and OSHA 1910.147 LOTO audit trails across twelve manufacturing plants.

A diversified industrial manufacturer operating composite curing autoclaves, high-pressure steam boilers, ASME B31.1 distribution headers, and compressed-air networks across twelve factories wanted to eliminate the gap between plant safety permits and mechanical integrity records.

Current state before intelliSPEC

  • Paper permits and LOTO tags lost after the shift: Confined-space entry permits, hot-work permits, and OSHA 1910.147 lockout/tagout (LOTO) verifications were filled out on carbon-copy pads and filed in cabinets, separate from the vessel or line being worked on.
  • Unmonitored condensate and steam-line thinning: Ultrasonic thickness checks on steam and condensate return lines happened only after a pinhole leak occurred.
  • Autoclave door-interlock and weld history scattered: High-cycle curing autoclaves needed routine magnetic-particle and ultrasonic inspection of locking-ring welds and safety interlocks for insurer approval.

Configured path

The manufacturer rolled out intelliVISION, intelliINSPECT, intelliNDT, intelliINTEGRITY, and intelliCOMPLY, with floor capture in intelliEDGE.

  1. Plant utility and autoclave register: Boilers, autoclaves, air receivers, and steam circuits were registered in across all twelve plants.
  2. Digital LOTO and confined-space permits on the asset: Before an inspector entered an autoclave or boiler drum, the LOTO isolation verification and confined-space permit were signed in on the same tablet used for the inspection.
  3. ASME B31.1 corrosion trending: calculated erosion-corrosion rates and remaining life on steam and condensate elbows, flagging thin spools before failure.

Measured outcome

  • Unified safety and integrity record: Every autoclave and boiler inspection carries its signed LOTO permit, gas-test log, visual checklist, and NDE report in one audit trail.
  • Fewer unplanned steam leaks: Condition-based UT surveys on B31.1 headers catch condensate thinning during planned maintenance windows.
  • Rapid corporate insurance renewals: Property and boiler-and-machinery insurers review fleet-wide NBIC NB-23 compliance from one dashboard.
