Aerospace NDT qualification traceability

2026-08-05 · Serialized airframe & turbine components (NAS410 / EN 4179 / AS9100 / Nadcap)

Measured outcomeZero Nadcap or AS9100 audit findings on examiner qualification, eye-exam currency, or DICONDE image traceability.

In aerospace manufacturing and Part 145 maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), every non-destructive test (fluorescent penetrant, magnetic particle, eddy current, ultrasonic, and digital radiography) must be performed by an examiner holding a current NAS410 / EN 4179 certification and vision check, using calibrated equipment, with digital media retained per ASTM E2339 (DICONDE).

Current state before intelliSPEC

  • Audit exposure on vision and recertification dates: Tracking annual near-vision acuity and formal recertification windows across dozens of Level II and Level III examiners in spreadsheets created risk that an expired examiner could sign a traveler.
  • Calibration certificates separated from the part record: Proving during a Nadcap or customer audit which light meter, blacklight, transducer, or reference standard was used on a specific serial number required manual logbook lookups.
  • Orphaned radiographic and C-scan files: Digital RT and UT files sat on local workstation drives rather than attached to the serialized part's quality record.

Configured path

The operation implemented intelliNDT, intelliCREW, intelliTRACK, and intelliCOMPLY over the intelliVISION serialized register.

  1. NAS410 / EN 4179 credential enforcement: tracked method, level, technique hours, annual vision exams, and Level III approvals, blocking sign-off if any requirement was expired.
  2. Serialized gauge and standard custody: bound calibrated UT instruments, penetrameters, shims, and UV-A meters to the inspection record by barcode scan, halting use if a calibration date was past due.
  3. DICONDE media retention: attached ASTM E2339 DICONDE radiographic and ultrasonic datasets, technique sheets, and acceptance calls directly to the part and serial number.

Measured outcome

  • Bulletproof Nadcap and FAA Part 145 audits: Auditors pull any serialized component and see the technique sheet, DICONDE image, instrument calibration cert, and examiner NAS410 record in one screen.
  • Proactive renewal scheduling: flags single-inspector coverage gaps and upcoming vision or method renewals weeks before expiry.
  • Long-term archival integrity: Digital NDE media and metadata remain readable and linked to the airframe or engine serial over multi-decade retention rules.
